With Utila to the west and Guanaja to the east The Bay Islands of Honduras are located approximately 40 miles (65km) off the northern coast of Honduras. The island is roughly 48 miles (77km) long and 5 miles (8km) wide at its widest point. The western end of the island is where most of the resorts and tourism is located where as the east end is far more isolated.
The Country of Honduras was given its name by Christopher Columbus who landed in the Bay Islands on his 4th Voyage. The Bay Islands are located on the 2nd largest barrier reef in the world which will always make it a haven for scuba diving and tourism. The island is a mix of English and Spanish influences and both languages are widely spoken.

Roatan has an international airport providing service to major American and Canadian cities like Houston, Miami, Atlanta, and Toronto. There are also many connecting flights to the island from the international airport in San Pedro Sula on the mainland. Roatan is also a major cruise ship destination with ports in both Coxen Hole and Mahogany Bay.
